5 Must-Have Storage Pieces You Need in Your Home

Posted on January 28 2019

For many of us, the new year is a great time to get our homes organized. Clearing out the clutter clears our minds and allows our homes to finally breathe again.

It's also a great time of year to invest in new pieces of storage for your home. While boxes and baskets can only go so far, larger investment pieces can do the job of not only adding plenty of well-placed storage but also of adding style to your home.

What storage pieces should be investing in? Here are our top 5 storage pieces we feel should be in everyone's home.

The Sideboard

Miranda Buffet / Jaguar Sideboard / Carl Buffet

Whether you call it a sideboard, a buffet or a credenza, you probably need at least one in your home. This long and lean piece is the perfect accent on a larger wall and provides ample storage for all those necessities that you may not want on display at all times.

Use it to house your table linens and silverware or your best china in your dining room or use it to house board games and platters for your family nights or dinner parties in your living room.

The surface can be decorated to bring plenty of style into your home, showing off items you’ve picked up on your travels, your favourite books, a set of lamps and decorative objects. Or call it into service when hosting to serve buffet-style or as a make-shift cocktail bar.

Look out for pieces that work with your decorating style. From vintage-style pieces and industrial looks to elegant design details such as brass or mirror, you can create the wow-factor in your home with this singular important piece of storage in your home.

The Dresser

Marcel Dresser / Curved Front Chest / Greer Dresser

In the bedroom, you’ll need more than just your closet to house clothing, especially things like thick chunky sweaters, pyjamas and underwear. You’ll be able to make plenty of room on your clothing rails by putting away those things that don’t need to take up valuable space and make it easier to get yourself together first thing in the morning.

Consider your needs and look out for pieces with plenty of drawer space to house your requirements. Darker wood pieces add an elegant timeless effect in a more traditional home and lighter wood will capture the essence of farmhouse style beautifully.

Resist the urge to clutter the top to create a serene scene in your bedroom. A simple small lamp, a plant or fresh flowers and a decorative tray to house makeup or perfume will give your room style and add a bit of personality to your space.

The Armoire or Display Cabinet

Comles Display Cabinet / Alexander Cabinet / Marceline Cabinet

While a closet is always a welcome addition, if you really want to bring some style into your home, consider the beauty of an armoire or display cabinet. This free-standing piece can be used anywhere you like – from a hallway to stylishly corral coats and shoes, to a bedroom as extra hanging space to a living area to house cozy pillows or a place to house glassware and plates.

They add elegance and style if you’d like a bit of European styling in your home and add additional vertical storage without taking up a lot of additional floor space.

The Bookcase

If you are a bit of a bibliophile, then your perfect companion will nearly always be a bookcase. However, even if you don’t have a huge collection, a bookcase makes the perfect spot for vertical display in your home.

We’ve shared our styling tips (you can read those here) but consider a bookcase as an opportunity to bring in some of your personality into a space. From bowls and baskets to vintage pieces, small artwork and more, your bookcase can do plenty to create a stylish look in any space.

The Nightstand

And finally, good things come in small packaging and your bedside table is a little powerhouse that will work wonders for keeping your bedroom organized.

Look out for ones with both drawers and shelves to stash away your favourite pampering products and bedtime reading material and style the top with a small reading lamp, fresh flowers and a tray to corral your everyday jewelry.

A matching pair on each side of the bed creates calmness and symmetry in a room and be sure to look out for pieces that are of a similar height to your mattress to create a visually more pleasing scene.
